Woodcutting Training Guide

Guide links:

Introduction

This guide will tell you in detail where and how to train your woodcutting level - from level 1 to 99, which hatchets you should use, and everything you need to know when training your woodcutting level.

FREE PLAYERS

The first part of the guide is for free players. If you are a member, scroll down to the Members section.

Levels 1-15: Normal Trees

In these first levels, you can only cut normal trees. This also includes Evergreens and Dead Trees. There are also 4 hatchets that you can wield in this level range:
Picture Name Info
Bronze hatchet Bronze hatchet No level needed. Only costs a few gp.
Iron hatchet Iron hatchet No level needed. This is much better than a bronze hatchet.
Steel hatchet Steel hatchet Level 6 needed. Better than iron, but not as good as black.
Black hatchet Black hatchet Level 6 needed. Best hatchet you can wield in this level range.

As you can see, the Iron hatchet is better than the Bronze one, so you that's what you should get. Hatchets can be smithed, or you can buy them from Bob in Lumbridge [map].

Normal trees are spread all over RuneScape, and you should just find a place with many trees and no-one else and start chopping. The normal logs are not really worth anything, so you should burn them. Put one tinderbox in your inventory, and when your inventory gets full, burn all your logs. This will give you good woodcutting XP and firemaking XP!

To reach level 15, you will need to cut 97 trees.

Some good places are:
– Just west of Lumbridge [map]
– Between Draynor Manor and Draynor Village (good if you want to bank) [map]
– West of Barbarian Village / South of Monastery (evergreens) [map]
There are of course many, many other good places, as I said earlier. Just find a place with many trees and start chopping.

Levels 15-35: Oaks

Congratulations, you can now cut oak trees! Like the normal trees, oaks are found all over the RuneScape world. And they are not really worth keeping, so burn them too. Unlike the normal trees, you can now cut oaks many times and get several logs before the tree actually disappears. But remember that this will be more challenging; you will need to cut oaks 534 times to get to level 35!

Some good places are:
– Just south of the southern Varrock gates; northeast of the Champions' Guild (most likely the best place) [map]
– Many trees around Draynor Village. 3 oaks next to each other north of the village (closer to bank) [map]

After some training, you will also be able to use two new hatchets!
Picture Name Info
Mithril hatchet Mithril hatchet Level 21 needed. Can be smithed or bought from fellow players
Adamant hatchet Adamant hatchet Level 31 needed. Can be smithed or bought from fellow players.

Levels 35-65: Willows

You have been able to cut willows from level 30, but since it would be too slow to cut it at that level, you should not start before level 35. Willow logs sells for 25-40 gp, so you might want to sell them. If you're not selling them, then just burn them as the oaks and normal logs, or store them in your bank. You won't be able to cut anything new until you reach level 60, when you're able to cut yews, so you'll be cutting willows for a while. This will be boring after a while, so don't train only this, as you will need to cut 6327 willows to reach level 65!

Some good places are:
– South of Draynor Bank (good if you want to bank your logs. Usually crowded) [map]
– The water between Draynor Village and Lumbridge (good if you want to burn your logs, hardly anyone there) [map]

After some training, you'll be able to use a rune hatchet, the best hatchet for free players:
Picture Name Info
Rune hatchet Rune hatchet Level 41 needed. Costs about 8500 gp; can be bought from fellow players

Levels 65-99: Yews

As you probably know, you have been able to cut yews from level 60. However, it is really too slow and you would not gain fast xp or money that way. If you are only looking for xp, you should continue with willows, at least until level 70, as yews are still slow to get. However, if you're the one looking for money, yews are exactly the thing for you. Members are making lots of Yew Longbows, which they either sell or use high alchemy on. So they sell for alot, even in the free world, and it's easy to sell it. Each yew log can be sold for 400-430 gp. Unfortunately, yews are very popular, so there are almost always other woodcutters where you chop your yew.

Reaching level 99 won't be an easy task. You will need to cut 71915 yews to reach that level! Most of the people will give up, but remember that it's one of the best ways to make money!

Some good places are:
– South of Edgeville Bank (not far to the bank) [map]
– Just north of Varrock Palace [map]
– South of Falador [map]
– Between Draynor Village and Lumbridge (usually no-one there) [map]

MEMBERS

The rest of the guide is for members (paying players). If you're a free player, please go back to the Free Player section above.

Levels 1-15: Normal Trees

Black hatchet Black hatchet Level 6 needed. Best hatchet you can wield in this level range.
As you may see, the Iron hatchet is better than the Bronze one, so you should get one. Hatchets can be made in smithing, or you can buy them from Bob in Lumbridge [map].

You can also bring a knife with you, and cut the logs into headless arrows, and later into bows. This will increase your fletching level!

At level 15, you can cut oak trees, just like the free players. There's no need to keep them, as they don't really sell for much. So, you can either burn them or cut them into bows.

Adamant hatchet Adamant hatchet Level 31 needed. Can be smithed or bought from fellow players.

Levels 35-50: Willows

You have been able to cut willows from level 30, but since it would be too slow to cut it at that level, you should not start before level 35. Willow logs sells for 25-40 gp, so you might want to sell them. If you're not selling them, then just burn them as the oaks and normal logs, fletch them into bows or store them in your bank. To reach level 50, you will need to cut 1170 willows.

Some good places are:
– South of Draynor Bank (good if you want to bank your logs. Usually crowded) [map]
– The water between Draynor Village and Lumbridge (good if you want to burn your logs, rarely anyone there) [map]
– North-west of Seers' Bank [map]

After some training, you'll be able to use the Rune hatchet and Dragon hatchet:
Picture Name Info
Rune hatchet Rune hatchet Level 41 needed. Costs 15000-20000 gp; can be bought from fellow players
Dragon hatchet Dragon hatchet Level 61 needed. Costs 2M, can be bought from fellow players

Levels 50-65: Maple / Powercutting

There are now two options. The first option is to cut Maples, which is useful if you are training your firemaking or fletching, or if you are selling your logs. The other option is Powercutting, which will not give you any money; just very fast woodcutting XP.

Maples

Maples are easy to see; both on the RuneScape map and in the RuneScape world: They are, unlike the other trees, red. Maple trees are only located a few places in RuneScape. To reach level 65, you will have to cut 3481 maple trees.

Some good places are:
 – North of Seers' Bank (close to bank, but often crowded) [map]
 – East of the Legends' Guild [map]
 – North-West of Seers' Village [map]

Powercutting

Powercutting is a special way to cut. This is one of the best ways to train if you're only looking for woodcutting XP. You actually get XP faster than tree logs until level 90!

To start powercutting, you will have to have started on the Legends' Quest, or completed it. You won't need an hatchet, but a machete.
There are 4 types of machetes:
 – Normal Machete
 – Opal Machete
 – Jade Machete
 – Red Topaz Machete
Red Topaz Machete is currently the best machete.

When you have the machete, head to the Kharazi Jungle south on the Karamja Island; south of Shilo Village. Start chopping. Note that jungle bushes gives more and faster experience than the jungle trees!

Levels 65-75: Yews / Powercutting

You can either continue with the powercutting, explained above, or start with yews. Yews is easy to sell, and each yew log sells for around 400-430gp each. Many people makes the yew logs into yew longbows, and adds a string to it, then use high level alchemy. This gives alot of xp and money. But after all, you can decide what you want to do with your logs. :)

You will need to cut 4349 yews to reach level 75.

Some good places are:
– South of Edgeville Bank (not far to the bank) [map]
– South of the beehives west of Catherby (6 yews here) [map]
– Just north of Varrock Palace [map]
– South of Falador [map]
– Between Draynor Village and Lumbridge (usually no-one there) [map]

Levels 75-99: Magic Trees / Yews / Powercutting

You can either continue with the powercutting, the yews or start with magics. Magic trees are not really a good way to earn experience, as they are very slow to cut. However, each magic log can be sold for 1000gp each! You can also continue cutting yews, which will give you more experience, or continue with the powercutting; both explained above. Note that you will earn more experience from yews than powercutting after level 90!

But whatever you chose, it will be hard to reach level 99. You will need to cut 67566 yews or 47297 magic logs to reach level 99!

Some good places with magic trees are:
– Just south of the Sorcerers' Tower (4 magic trees) [map]
– West of the Sorcerers' Tower (3 magic trees) [map]
– Tree Gnome Stronghold (1 tree close to bank) [map]
